How do dredgers stop flooding?

A dredger digs (or dredges) the soil off the bottom of the body of water, effectively making it deeper. Once the soil is deposited on the shore there is now that much more room for water without flooding. Think of it as having a cup full of water, then all of a sudden making the cup larger.
