There are two major ways that humans can cause oil spills: (1) when tankers, which are carrying crude oil from one port to another, either collide with another ship, run aground, or spring a leak of some kind; (2) When an offshore rig that is drilling for oil catches fire or has a serious leak, spewing oil into the ocean the way the BP disaster did back in 2010. In both cases, the results are deadly for the environment. Also, some oil spills are caused by companies illegally dumping their excess oil, which can end up polluting local wells or water supplies; and individuals illegally disposing of motor oil in a storm drain, which can carry it into lakes or even the ocean.
