I never imagined that I would be gay. I started to do a little research about my feelings in high school, but I never actually admitted to myself that I was gay. Once I started college, I took this one identity class and realized that I was, in fact, gay. Once that sunk in, all hell broke loose. I started getting to depressed, crying to myself in private, everything. Eventually, I couldn't take it anymore and went into my sister's room one afternoon and told her everything. She gave me some hugs and told me there was nothing wrong with being gay (I already knew this, but I needed to hear it from someone else), and that she'd support me if I ever told our parents. After a week or or two I broke down and told my mom, who was actually angry that I was making such a big deal out of it and that I had questioned whether or not she'd support me (obviously she did support me). So things have been fine, but I still haven't told my dad who is essentially a very staunch Catholic (blindly obedient and everything), so I figured I'd hold off on awhile. I think he suspects that I'm gay though.

To conclude, here are some steps I'd take if you want to come out of the closet:

1. Do some research on homosexuality in your spare time

2. Join your high school or college gay pride group (gay-straight alliance, pride alliance, etc.). This will get you more comfortable with being gay, as you'll be interacting with people just like you

3. Tell your most-trusted friend or friends for practice. If they don't like you anymore because you're gay, then they weren't much of a friend to you to begin with

4. Tell your most-trusted sibling if you have one

5. Tell the rest of your siblings if you have any

6. Prepare yourself and tell your parents. It helps to have your siblings you told with you.

7. Pledge to yourself that if someone asks if you're gay in the future, that you WON'T SAY "No I'm not". This DOESN'T mean you have to say yes, you can just say "that's none of your business" if say you ever meet a close-minded person. Just don't lie and deny that you're gay, because you should know by now that you should be proud of who you are.

8. Congratulations! You have now earned the honorary title of an "openly gay person". Now get a boyfriend and live your life!
