I find that being witty and sarcastically self deprecating works best. For example, if someone were to say "Heard you did some gay stuff this weekend". Act nonchalantly and say something like, "Wow, that got around fast" Most people already see them for who they are and know you are joking when you respond like that. Trying to fight back physically or verbally is just what they want you to do and it usually doesn't help. The reason that they are attacking you is that they are unhappy with themselves.
An assertive person is calm and stands his/her ground. He/She is convaince of his/her values. Does not need another person to determine for him/her right from wrong. And in case they happen to be wrong, they can easily appologise without feeling ashame. The Book of Galatians 5: 22-23 describes the personality of someone assertive in these words. " they love, have joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. On the other hand an aggressive person is: according to Galatians 5: 19-21 in these words. " They are sexually immoral, unclean, brazen in their conduct, involve in idolatry, spiritism, hostility, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, envy, drunkenness and so forth...... So to answer your question: An assertive person is someone who has values based on God's requirements, and an aggressive person is someone who is under the influence of the one who is misleading our world described in the Book of 1 John 5: 19 and Revelation 12: 9. 1John 5: 19 reads. " The whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one. And Revelation 12: 9 tells us that the wicked one is the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth. Their values are described in the Book of 2 Timothy 3: 1-5, as people who are lovers of themselves, lovers of money unthankful, disloyal and so forth.....

Assertive behavior is when you state in a resonable way what you want without putting down or humiliating anyone else. You speak calmly, do not call names and say, "This is what I need. How can I get it?" You stand up for yourself but not at the expense of others. http://itjustaintso.blogspot.com
