How do you prove you're not racist?

Don't do or say anything that's racist. If you go overboard trying to prove how racist you aren't, that can be seen as a problem as if you're patronizing whatever race it is, and as if it's not from the heart.

Here are some ways to try to reduce racism in yourself.

1. Remember that a lot of what seems like racial differences are really differences related to social class. When more of a certain group of people are in a lower social class, more of that race will behave according to the values and culture associated with that class. Put another way, if you see a person panhandling, it is because they are poor, not because of their color.

2. Try to distance yourself from those who express racist views. If you have to be around them, then you could tell them that their words offend you. You shouldn't laugh at any racist (or sexist, or homophobic) jokes that they may tell. It is better that they accuse you of not being able to take a joke than for them to assume you like their jokes.

3. Don't join hate groups. The problem with being in such groups is that their words gradually take root, and how you treat others may be affected. Adolph Hitler was able to take a lot of average Germans and convince them that Jewish people and others were evil and needed exterminated. They did not learn to get that way just overnight. They heard years of Propaganda.

4. Get to know people outside your own ethnic group and try to realize there are good and bad people in every group.
