It's very clear that if you had black, Chinese, Japanese neighbors and never had anything to do with them because of their race then you are sending them a message that they aren't good enough to live in your neighborhood (work with you) or come to social events. It causes hard feelings and friction. If a man/woman isn't hired for a job because of the color of their skin then it hurts that person, makes them jaded and angry. We really all are brothers and sisters and quite personally I've never understood racism. If we don't stand together then we lose as far as the human race surviving.
