The hybrid system in the Toyota Prius consists of a gasoline engine, an electric motor, a large battery and a variable drive system. The computer controller automatically uses all of these elements optimally in each driving situation. The net result is less fuel used because the gasoline engine does not need to be on all of the time. Some of the time no power is used, some of the time the car slows down and the battery is charged, some of the time the car is powered by the electric motor using previously stored electricity. Because less fuel is used less pollution is generated, when compared to a similar size and performance gasoline car.
