The areal extent of this spill was visible from the sky. It is interesting that just 25 gallons of oil may cover a one square mile area. If the water is choppy, it may be difficult to see the full extent of the spill in the water, but it will be obvious to the rig personel that there has been a blow out.

On a rig floor, an underground blow out may first be recognized by sudden increase in pressure from gas or oil coming up the wellbore. Gas detectors should go off.
