The United States is considered by many sociologists to be a racialized society. While most people bristle at being called racist, and are quick to point out that an African American man has been elected president twice, just beneath the surface, race can a dividing factor within our society. While race and ethnicity issues can boil down to simply being the tribal nature of our species, in the United States the racial divide is more marked than in other societies. This may be a result of our history of slavery, and Native American conflicts early in the country's history, which caused a basic distrust of others based on racial type. The attitude manifested not just with African and Native Americans, but with immigrants of Asian and Jewish ethnicity as well.

Why is equality important in society?

Equal opportunities are important in society and the public services because we are all people and as such we should all have the same rights and opportunities regardless of age, race, gender, sexuality or cultural background. Without equality of opportunity we cannot progress as a society. It is important that we feel that there is no difference between ourselves and anybody else. By Lisandro C.
