Scientists usually say 4% to 10% of the worlds population is gay/lesbian, and another 10-15% Bisexual. That would mean with 36,961,664 people in the state of California, (Census - Jul 2009) at least 1,478,466 should theoretically be gay/lesbian.
From a website I read (commercialcloset.org) the population of the US is 6-7% homosexual with that number being larger in metropolitan areas. Since San Francisco and Los Angeles are major metropolitan areas one would assume the percentages to be higher there like 8-10%, so my guess would be around 7% of the population of California. There are about 37 million in California so I would guestimate that there would be around 2.6 millions gays, lesbians, and bisexuals living in California. The number is probably much higher, however, as it is difficult to ascertain how many "in-the-closet" homosexuals there are.
