The eruption of Mount Saint Helens was by far one of the worst natural disasters America ever faced. The blast leveled enough trees to build 300,000 homes and melting glaciers mixed with ash to form destructive mudflows that flooded the rivers and destroyed over 30 bridges. In result, tens of summer homes in the area were destroyed and 57 people died.
The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo was the deadliest eruption on record in the Philippines with over 800 deaths. It was also one of the largest ever recorded, ten times larger than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, making it a VEI 6, one of only two such eruptions in the 20th century. In addition to the deaths, many areas suffered the impacts of the huge amount of ash that fell across much of the Philippines, exacerbated by heavy rain from Typhoon Yunya.
The worst eruption of Santorini ocurred some time between 1500 and 1700 BC. Realtively little is known about the eruption as few records survive from this time. What is known is that the erumption was enormous, likely 100 times larger than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. A massive quantity of ash was pumped into the atmosphere, likely blanketing much of the Mediterranean. As the eruption drained the magma chamber, much of the island collapsed into the ocean, generating massive tsunamis.
