I may be wrong but I believe it was done so as the Red Indians were violent to the natives there and were considered to have a hunger for blood. They would paint themselves in a red mixture as to fool the natives that it truly was blood, hence how they earn't the name Red Indians. Your guess is poles apart from Reality. The Red Indians were the Natives and the Settlers killed them or enslaved them and occupied their lands. Better refer to History.
