You have to look at both sides of the question - harm and benefit.

Harm:

* Schools use heat and power this creates emissions (See benefit) * Schools use paper and other supplies - however much of this can be recycled * School shop classes often d not have pollution control equipment

* School sports teams have to be transported using fuel * School labs produce hazardous waste * Students are exposed to cigarette smoke when thy sneak off for a puff * Students bring lunch to school which are often over-packaged individual portions, thus creating a lot of unrecycled garbage

Benefit:

* Schools use heat and power this creates emissions but the economics of scale make it more efficient to heat up large numbers of students in a group than in each of their homes * Students are under supervision and not driving around using fuel * School yards are green spaces * Schools train students to fight pollution * Many students feel that the school cafeteria recycles industrial waste * Mechanics classes (shop) tech auto maintenance
