In Greek, 'anim' means life. The word animal is derived from this root by adding the suffix 'al' which only means 'something having life' and nowadays, 'something capable of moving'. It is from this same root that the words animalism, animate, inanimate, animation, animalistic, animocity, etc, are derived. It is because man is a four-legged vertebrate that he is considered an animal.
