Gaydar is the portmanteau of the words gay and radar. It has become a colloquialism and is construed as the ability to tell if someone is gay. There have been numerous studies, some of which support the idea that there is some truth that sexual orientation can be "sensed."

Most people who use gaydar, rely on body movements, gestures, and voice patterns. With the introduction of such code-work as the Hankerchief Code, and Jelly Bracelet color codes, it has become easier for homosexually oriented people to communicate their choices of partners.

Studies on this subject have shown various results. Most show that there is no such thing. One famous study showed that gay men can correctly guess the sexual orientation of other gay men more often than would be attributed to chance. This study doesn't explain why this is true though, and in any case, it's all based on stereotyping.

The ability to pick out potential homosexual partners among a group, is more based on understanding a regions gay culture and the nuances associated with it than any 6th sense.
