Hydrogen has to come from somewhere.
The conversion of electricity to hydrogen is inherently inefficient.
There may be applications for a mobile application of Hydrogen (automobiles) where there are requirements of high power density and quick "charges". However, for a fixed location such as a building, it would be inefficient, and one would be better off just using electricity.
Remember, of course, most of the Natural Gas that is used in the USA is a fossil fuel.

The element hydrogen alone is eco-friendly, however when it is a part of methane it acts as a greenhouse gas. It is also present in hydrochlorofluorocarbons which irreparably destroy the ozone.

Hydrogen gas (pure hydrogen) is considered eco-friendly because when it is burned the only emission is water. One of the downsides of using hydrogen is that it can be very expensive to produce. Electrolysis, the process of splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, takes a huge amount of electricity to create any usable amount of hydrogen. Another factor that is preventing the widespread use of hydrogen is distribution. Today, convenience sometimes overrules price when it comes to making our decisions. Currently there is no infrastructure to support a hydrogen economy and until one exists, applications of hydrogen's eco-friendly uses will continue to struggle. One technology on the horizon is the solar thermal splitting of water, which is the process of heating water until the hydrogen and oxygen atoms split. The advantage to this process is that it is cheap (sunlight is free) and it could be easily adapted for home use.
