There are "fine sandy gravel aquifers" everywhere and some of them may be polluted, but your question is too vague. You must at least state an area that you are talking about.
The water table was polluted by the pollution source due to rainfall or ground water contamination near the pollution site.
It depends on the source of the pollution but various sulphates, which contribute to "acid rain," are a common polutant.

The pollution illustrated by a pipe gushing polluted water into a river is water pollution. This occurs when harmful substances are discharged directly into bodies of water, which can have severe negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.
An aquifer is an underground fresh water source.
Well there are a lot of examples of water pollutants. I am just going to name four of them. These include: wastes, litter, hair products, and burning fuel.Water can get polluted by people throwing waste in the streams, lakes, and rivers. Another reason waters are polluted is from dirt and food.
The Ogallala Aquifer in the United States is a large underground aquifer spanning eight states and providing water for irrigation and domestic use. It is an important source of water for agriculture in the Midwest.
It's fresh. It becomes polluted.
Acid rain is a non point source pollution. A non point source pollution is a form of pollution which forms in a very broad area and enters the polluted area in small, diffused flows. Since acid rain forms in the sky, and falls to the ground a little at a time, it is considered a non point source pollution.

D Druliner has written: 'Relations of nonpoint-source nitrate and atrazine concentrations in the High Plains aquifer to selected explanatory variables in six Nebraska study areas' -- subject(s): Agricultural chemicals, Environmental aspects, Environmental aspects of Agricultural chemicals, Groundwater, Nonpoint source pollution, Pollution
the difference is that a point source pollution comes from a specific site & the non-point source pollution comes from many sources rather than a single specific site. or point source pollution is pollution that comes from a known and specific location. Nonpoint source pollution is pollution that does not have a specific point of orign....................:-)Hisme John
