2.Pol pot was a dictator in the 1970s in Cambodia. He ordered the execution of around one million people whose views and lifestyles he disagreed with. He did this because he wanted to get rid of all aspects of western culture from Cambodia.

There have been countless instances of human rights being broken in modern history. There is no universally agreed-upon set of rights which all humans innately have. In the United States Constitution, citizens are guaranteed the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Some nations base their legal code on religious doctrine, which allocates different right to people of different sexes and social classes.

Perhaps the most universal human right is the right to life. From this perspective, any incidence of murder (perhaps without just cause) would be considered a breaking of an individual's human rights. Another generally accepted inalienable right is freedom, within reason and within limitation. Some well known examples include:

• The Holocaust during World War II, during which 11 million people were murdered
• The South African Apartheid from 1948-1994, wherein racism was legally institutionalized
• The internment of Japanese immigrants and Japanese-Americans by the United States government during WWII

Again, the definition of "human rights" is extremely variable and subjective. Do not take these examples as a definitive list by any means, but simply as some of the more well-known and globally accepted examples of times when human rights have been violated.
