The laws in Egypt do not explicitly address homosexuality since, until 2001, the government of Egypt did not recognize the existence of homosexuality. Sexual orientation is addressed by various other morality laws so, while not explicitly outlawed, for all practical purposes, homosexuality is illegal in Egypt. Suspected homosexuals can be convicted under various laws, such as "contempt of religion" and "moral depravity". Enforcement has become more strict over the last ten years. There is no protection whatsoever for civil rights based on sexual orientation or gender identity in Egypt.
