Quite a question! Homosexual behavior has been part of all human societies as far back as you can look. It has been celebrated, tolerated and banned, seen as the highest form of love and as "the love that dare not speak its name."

As far as we know, most human beings are capable of homosexual acts, even if they rarely engage in them. (This suggests to me that it functions as a form of population control.) Some people -- from six to ten percent, by most estimates -- are primarily or exclusively homosexually oriented. This percentage appears to have remained constant across time and societies.

The "problems" between society and homosexuals are caused by a vicious cycle of Ignorance, Fear and Hatred. As hatred grows, it encourages ignorance and the poison sinks deeper. Chances are, virtually everything people in America think they know about homosexuals is wrong. In recent years, however (thanks in large part to the Web!) the cycle is being broken at its weakest link -- ignorance. The more we learn about the differences among us, the stronger our society becomes.

Are there negative effects of homosexuality?

There are no directly negative effects of homosexuality just as there are no directly negative effects of heterosexuality. However, many homosexual and bisexual people suffer persecution and/or a lack of acceptance. Bigotry towards homosexuals is believed to be the leading cause of teen suicide. Bigotry towards homosexuals also causes persecution that can result in verbal abuse, hate crimes, and/or the denial of rights and privileges afforded to heterosexuals. On the bright side, gay rights movements are gaining ground globally.

What does the research on the causes of homosexuality suggest?

How are social problems different from sociological problems?

Sociological problems are phenomena studied by sociologists to understand their causes, consequences, and implications for society. In other words, social problems are the actual issues, while sociological problems are the theories and research related to those issues.
