Gays and lesbians believe that they are equal, deserve equal rights under the law, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and should be able to live their lives in peace without interference from others. Gay people believe they should not be expected to change their sexual orientation any more than straight people should be expected to change theirs. Gay people believe they are not subject to the rules of religions to which they do not belong.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) teaches that homosexual activity is a sin. Homosexuals may be members of the church if they live a celibate lifestyle. Homosexuals who are not celibate may attend worship services but cannot be baptized.

As far as their stance on public and political issues regarding homosexuality, the Church is an active opponent of gay marriage. They do, however, support laws which protect the equal rights of gays in other areas - such as housing and employment. They say that God is the father of all men, and as such all men should be subject to the same legal rights. At the same time they believe that marriage between man and women only is ordained of God. Most church members support some form of "equal rights without an equal name" legislation, such as those for Civil Unions.
