For business executives, clergy, and political figures, a scandal can destroy a reputation and make it impossible for the person to be respected by the general public. Many occupations are based on trust, and leaders in those occupation are supposed to set a positive example. For example, if a business executive becomes associated with scandal, both the public and professional colleagues might no longer think that person is trust-worthy. The person may be fired, and it can then become difficult to find another job.

Senators, governors, and presidents (from both political parties) have also been harmed by scandals, and even if eventually certain politicians were able to get re-elected, there were many people who never felt the same about them and refused to support their candidacy. Scandal can also be very detrimental for members of the clergy, because they are expected to up-hold standards of morality, and when they are caught up in a scandal, it makes them seem like hypocrites.
