What can we do to reduce the level of greenhouse gases accumulating in the atmosphere?

The carbon cycle moves carbon dioxide in and out of the atmosphere, and has kept it in balance for millions of years. It would still be in balance if we had not discovered coal and oil and started burning these in industry, transport and to generate electricity. This burning releases carbon dioxide.

Humans can stop the production of these anthropogenic greenhouse gases by changing from fossil fuel energy (burning coal and oil) and moving to renewable sources of energy (solar, geothermal, biomass, wind etc, that do not have carbon dioxide emissions).

By changing some agricultural practices we can reduce the amount of methane added to the atmosphere. There are already schemes in pig and cattle farms that capture methane from the animal manure. Scientists are also experimenting with different cattle feeds to try and reduce methane belch from cows and other ruminants.
