Most immigrants coming to the U.S. in the early 1900s arrived by ship, which was often a terrible experience. The ships were crowded & disease spread quickly. Many immigrants died aboard the ships, & those that survived suffered terrible hardships.

I think you are confused. Pioneers were all ready living in the United States and decided to go west in wagons filled with every thing they owned to settle in the west. They faced many dangers. Flooding rivers, spring snow storms, lack of water, death, wagons breaking down, getting lost, mountain passes and wagons going over a cliff.
