What do you do if you are in a forest and there is a fire?

call for help and donot go to the kitchen If the fire is small,use a fire extinguisher. If you are by yourself or cannot control it with a small extinguisher, leave the building and call 911. In a share building (condo, apartment, commercial) pull the fire alarm handle. Most shared buildings have a fire plan with locations for the assembly of residents. These may be posted near the main entrance, as well as on each floor. Do not use the elevator.

Many would advise you to run away, however forest fires can burn at 6 km/, considerably faster than you can run through a forest, especially if you are in the smoke of a forest fire.

It is advisable to run across the wind direction to be in the smoke plume as short a time as possible. If you know of a rocky or treeless area nearby run to it, attempt to reach a pond or stream.

Forest fires generally do not spring up with no one noticing. If you have found a fire it is probably still quite small making your escape more probable. If the fire is older and larger and you went just to see it you may be in trouble.
