Oil spills can damage natural habitats. The interactions of oil and the marine ecosystem are very important to understand.

Also, the process by which sea water will transform (or weather the oil) is very important as bacteria within sea water play a role. Understanding oil spills requires an understanding of principles of physics, chemistry and Biology.

I have included a number of links that relate the study of biology and oil spills. In the Exxon-Valdez spill, the clean up on the shore line used "bio-remediation" - see link.
