River pollution kills the single celled organisms that many of the creatures in the water need to live off of. While the garbage in the water breaks down it releases poisons (especially in plastic) that can potentially harm animals that eat fish or other organisms that live within the river. This is why when rivers become overly polluted, you see less and less of animals around it.
