During the war, American industry had focused on producing weapons and supplies. Now the war is over, there are high demands for goods and better wages and working hours. However factories that had been producing war materials cannot change to making clothing, shoes, cars, and other goods that a peacetime population needs. Prices went up, while the soldiers came home, looking for places to live, drove up the cost of housing. During the war, workers could no go on strike, but now it was time to push for higher wages and for workdays shorter than 12 hours.
