I don't know if Mr Charles Upham would like to say he was "rescued" from Colditz, however it was the American Army that first liberated the Colditz Castle on the 16th April 1945. Subsequently, most POW's held in Colditz Castle were arranged forthwith to return to their respective countries. Charles Upham however had other ideas, and as the Colditz Castle Kommandant had already surrendered to the POW's inside Colditz and made the castle's armoury available to the POW's, Upham took weapons from the armoury and proceeded to leave the castle and continue on his quest to fight the German's. However it was not to be - when he was identified by the Americans in the town as Charles Hazlitt Upham, VC winner, he was ordered to return to Britain along with the other POW's.
