Air quality (AQ) scientists are researchers that use different scientific disciplines (e.g. chemistry, physics, mathematics, epidemiology...) to explore scientific atmospheric issues. For example, is ground-level ozone increasing and if so, why? What will 20% more vehicles mean for ambiant AQ in a region? Is pollution flowing from one country to another and if so, how much? This position requires a strong scientific education.

AQ engineers design ways to reduce air emissions. This is a technical position with eventual opportunity for advancement into management. The position requires a strong scientific/ technical education.

AQ planners are people who work with scientists and engineers to identify AQ issues and propose solutions for implementation. For example, if 20% more vehicles are expected to increase ambiant NOx levels by 10% then could a new light-rail transportation system help the problem?

There are also AQ careers in management, communications, outreach, enforcement, sales...
