The sun
The original source of energy for all living things on earth is the sun. This energy is converted into a usable form for living things through the process of photosynthesis, in which plants and some other organisms absorb sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce glucose (sugar) and oxygen. Living things then utilize this glucose as a source of energy through cellular respiration.
All living things are composed of a mix of inorganic and organic molecules such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. There is energy contained within the bonds of the organic molecules. When you eat something that is or was once living and digest it and break apart the bonds contained in those molecules, you can transform that energy into a usable form such as ATP.

The energy source can be either the radiant energy of the sun, converted to a usable form by photosynthesis, or the chemical energy of ingested food. The converted energy is used to maintain all life processes.
The whole point of cellular respiration is to harness energy from the original source, glucose, and transform it into a usable and stable source, ATP.
