A lesbian is a girl or a woman who is sexually and/or romantically attracted to the same sex, namely to other girls or women. A lesbian is sometimes called a gay woman, or a homosexual woman, but the word lesbian is usually preferred.

The name comes from the Greek island of Lesbos, where the female poet Sappho lived around 600 BC and wrote homo-erotic poetry.

Estimates are that between 5% and 10% of the female population of the world is lesbian. However, there are also an unspecified number of women who could be classified as "lesbian" although they self-identify as "bisexual".
