The main thing learned is that engineers are fallible and can succumb to both political pressure and become complacent about safety hazards when evidence of a problem appears repeatedly but no gross failure of the system happens (until a sudden disaster causes a total loss of the vehicle).
In other words engineers are people like the rest of us.
The Space Shuttle is already being replaced, and will be retired in 2010.
There were a total of six space shuttles in NASA's Space Shuttle program: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavour, and Enterprise (which was a prototype and never flew into space).
Six space shuttles have landed on the moon. The space shuttles, however, were a part of the Space Shuttle program and were not designed to operate on the moon’s surface. They were primarily used for missions in low Earth orbit.
Two of the space shuttles that exploded were the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986 and the Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003. Both tragedies resulted in the loss of crew members and led to investigations and reforms in the space shuttle program.
Unfortunately, the Space Shuttle Program Has Been Retired, and All Remaining Shuttles Converted Into Museum Exhibits. There Are No Longer Any Space Shuttle Launches.
As of now, the space shuttle program has been retired and no new shuttles are being built. The last space shuttle was the Space Shuttle Atlantis, which retired in 2011. The focus has shifted towards developing new spacecraft for space exploration.
there was 2 .. launching to get to the international space station up in space
At the moment, none are in space. The shuttle program has now finished and they will not fly again.
The space shuttles were owned by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), a government agency in the United States. The space shuttle program was managed and operated by NASA for space missions and exploration.
The Space Shuttle program began in 1981 with the launch of the first space shuttle, Columbia. Over the course of the program, five operational space shuttles were built and used for various missions until the program ended in 2011.
Jacqueline Langille has written: 'The space shuttle' -- subject- s -: Juvenile literature, Space Shuttle Program - U.S. -, Space shuttles
The space shuttle program included several shuttles, such as Atlantis, Challenger, Columbia, Discovery, and Endeavour, which transported crew to and from space.
