With respect to a given class, all functions can be split into four categories: 1. Member functions. 2. Static member functions. 3. Friend functions. 4. Non-member functions. All class member functions have the following three properties with respect to the class in which they are declared a member: 1. Private access to the class representation. 2. Scoped to the class. 3. Invoked through an instance of the class (has a 'this' pointer). Static member functions have the first two properties only. Friend functions have the first property only. Non-member functions have none of these properties.
Every non-static member function has a hidden pointer parameter named this which refers to the instance of the class the function was invoked against. For a given class, C, the type of the hidden this pointer is const C* but if the function is declared const, the pointer is const C* const. When referring to any class member, m, from within any non-static member function, this->m is implied.

You cannot point at a class, you can only point at an instance of a class, which is simply another term for an object. The class is essentially the object's type; it define's the object's behaviour, but is not the object in and of itself. The class also defines a pointer's type, so we can point at instances of a class and access the the object it represents through indirection.
