During World War I, Wilson closed German wireless networks and created boards to monitor criticism of the war, a violation of free speech. Congress then proceeded to pass an Espionage Act and a Trading with Enemies act that used censorship boards to make recommendations on censoring information. The Postmaster General was given absolute censorship over mail. The Sedition Act repressed anarchists, socialists, pacifists and radicals and the Alien Act preserved the right to deport any immigrant who had ever been involved with any anarchist organizations.
