what did the ten year old do? the punishment should fit the 'crime'.

communication should always be attempted first,

for example talking, or even lecturing, to your child about the behavior, why it happened, what steps you can take towards stopping this behavior etc.

If communication fails to work, move on to taking away privileges. It can be most effective to take away the child's most valued item. (and xbox, a cell phone, the computer, etc.)

The last resort should be grounding.
