First, don't hit her back, get away should be the first priority, get a safe distance and cool off. After your head is clear decide your course of action. Generally women are of smaller stature, have less physical strength than men, so the "hit like a man, get hit like a man", is a terribly short sighted philosophy, it neither produces the desired outcome, nor does it de-escalate the situation. Excuses like she came at me swinging or I felt threatened are not good enough. Man up and take the hit, it may be time to examine the relationship closely for separation or counseling. My personal experience says that hitting back leads to miserable regret. Second, depending on the circumstance, (dangerous woman, Martial Arts, military trained, police trained, athletic composition, weapons, etc.) as would happen to you, call the police and report it, especially if stalking is going on and yes leave very quickly to safety.
