In writing a report on any subject, you must organize your ideas. Many times, the first paragraph can be the hardest to write. After writing a report, you may want to go back and improve the first and last paragraph.

You might want to write a report on clean up efforts, but you need an introductory paragraph that briefly describes the accident. The when, what, where, why and how are all important. For instance, when did the oil first start to spill? What company was in charge of the rig? How deep was the water where they were drilling? This information should be presented first.

Now if you want to write about the clean up, then write down 3 or 4 ways that oil can be cleaned up. For example, it can be skimmed from the surface by boats. It can be burned using controlled burn booms. It can be picked up on beaches. Now for each of these ideas, see if you can find out more information. What does a skimmer look like?

Or perhaps you want to write a paragraph showing how this and other oil spills harm the environment. You can discuss the various types of marine life and the harm that oil spills can cause.

There are a lot of topics to write about. One topic can be the role of volunteers in the clean up.

Finally, there should be a clear opening and concluding statement. In your opening, remember you are investigating something that is in the news and important to many people. Try to think of why this is important. In your concluding statement, try to think of what you feel summarizes the information that has been presented. You can also add a statement of what you expect to happen in the future.

Good luck.
