In Christina Crawford's book Mommie Dearest, Christina wrote that she was aware of her mother Joan's 'lesbian proclivities'. There is also rumors about Joan either having an affair or being rebuffed by Marilyn Monroe. Joan had made comments to the press about Marilyn's oversexed appearance in the early 1950s which caused a controversy.

The rumors may have been started after the press incident. Joan was married four times and had many affairs with men. There has been no corroborated evidence that Joan had engaged in lesbian affairs. Part of the rumor mill may have to do with the type of characters that Joan played on the screen and that over the years she had developed a gay fan base.

She was also very good friends with William Haines, a former actor turned interior decorator who was openly gay. Joan was highly sexed so she could have experimented but her orientation seems to be based on facts heterosexual.
