From 1868 through the early 1870s the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) functioned as a loosely organized group of political and social terrorists. The Klan's goals included political defeat of the Republican Party and the maintenance of absolute white supremacy in response to newly gained civil and political rights by southern blacks after the Civil War (1861-65)
The most well know extremist group during reconstruction was the Klu Klux Klan or the KKK.

the Ku Klux Klan (KKK)
During Reconstruction, the Ku Klux Klan and the White League primarily supported the Democratic Party. These groups aimed to undermine Republican efforts to extend civil rights to African Americans and restore white supremacy in the South. Their violent tactics were used to intimidate voters and suppress the Republican Party, which was associated with Reconstruction and African American rights.
The Reconstruction Amendments to the Constitution were passed.
The Ku Klux Klan formed in the reconstruction era because the white southerners now felt out of power.

C.The Reconstruction Amendments to the Constitution were passed.
Congress enacted laws and amendments that allowed the government to enforce equal rights for African Americans. The governments in the South, though, faced opposition from groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.
To try to stop the changes in the U.S. south during Reconstruction following the U.S. Civil War, white southerners formed groups such as the Ku Klux Klan to terrorize blacks and restore the south to its former glory. The white southerners also passed laws, called The Black Codes, to restrict oppotunities for blacks. They also used sharecropping to keep the blacks tied them and to put the black sharecroppers in debt.
Reconstruction raised taxes for rebuilding. There was corruption in the government. For black people, there were few job oppourtunities. Many black people became sharecroppers. The Ku Klux Klan formed during reconstruction. And even though blacks were supposedly deemed separate but equal, that was not the case. Many whites wanted to stop blacks from voting.
