Nelson Mandela was suspended from the University of Fort Hare in 1940 due to his involvement in a student protest against the college administration. The protest was part of a broader movement against the policies of the institution, which Mandela and his peers found restrictive. This suspension ultimately led him to leave Fort Hare without completing his degree.
University College of Fort Hare is where Nelson Mandela enrolled to study a BA in Art. He was expelled for joining a student protest, but finally completed his studies through the University of South Africa; he returned to Fort Hare and graduated in 1943.
Nelson Mandela married his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko Mase, in 1944. After their divorce in 1958, he married Winnie Madikizela in 1958, and they remained married until their separation in 1992 and subsequent divorce in 1996. Mandela later married Graça Machel in 1998, who was the widow of former Mozambican President Samora Machel.
