Alan Shepard Jr.
Alan Shepard
Alan Shepard was the first American to travel into space less than a month after Russian Yuri Gagarin's historic flight. Shepard's suborbital flight on May 5, 1961, made him the second person, and the first American, to travel into space.
Alan Shepard
John Glenn.
The U.S. sent Astronaut Alan Shepard into space on May 5th, 1961. This was 23 days after the Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space on April 12th, 1961.
Alan Shepard became the first American to go into space. He was beaten by Yuri Gagarin just 23 days earlier but with hindsight had the United States Government not delayed he could have been the first man in space. But he did not go into Earth-orbit as Gagarin did. The first American to orbit the Earth was John Glenn and later Shepard was to feel overshadowed by Glenn.

Higher prices for food, long lines for food, not enough food, WAY LESS EMPLOYMENT, and less space. Sources: Our World Today Social Studies Book ( and my teacher Mrs. Luderman :))
$4000 a month now. Previous First Ladies were less fortunate with Laura Bush's being $1500 a month!
Eating less than 1000 cal/day can and most likely will cause weight gain.
In the early 1950s they used initial tests on rats, mice and rabbits which would not return to Earth. The Russians then chose dogs over monkeys because it was believed that they would be less fidgety in flight. In 1951-52 a total of nine dogs were sent into space. On November 3 1957 a dog named 'Laika' was the first dog in orbit. In 1960, 4 dogs, a grey rabbit, 40 mice, 2 rats, and 15 flasks of fruit flies were sent up. In 1961, 2 dogs, some mice and a guinea pig were sent up to space in March, before Yuri Gagarin was the first astronaut in April 1961. See the related link below for more information.
