Born Lidgissue Oliver he grew up on Duke Street in Port of Spain Trinidad and attended Trinity College in the early 1960's. Later when he became involved in the Black Power movement he chaged his surname from Oliver to Omowale. His research resolved the derivation (and proper spelling) of his first name (which became Lidj Yasu). During his socio-political involvement (in the 70's and80's) he was particularly close to Kamdon (nee Dave Darbeau, another Trinity boy).
