The "New Immigration"
Americans sought to restrict Asian immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to a combination of economic, social, and racial factors. Many white Americans viewed Asian immigrants as a threat to job opportunities and social stability, often fueled by prevailing racist attitudes that portrayed Asians as inferiors. Legislation such as the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Immigration Act of 1924 formalized these restrictions, aiming to preserve the perceived racial and cultural homogeneity of the United States. This discrimination reflected broader xenophobic sentiments and fears of cultural dilution during a period of significant immigration.
