He wore two shirts because he didn't want a shiver of coldness to be mistaken for a shiver of fear.

One of the shirts that he wore is now on display in the English stately home of Longleat House, in Wiltshire. It was the OUTER shirt, as it has fewer blood stains than if it had been the inner one (I think the inner one was burnt soon after the execution took place).
