One Opinion:As odd as this may sound, bullies are usually very unsure of themselves and lack self-esteem. They may not do well is school, think that they have no special talents, and don't believe that they have anything important or interesting to say to other students. Perhaps they are not appreciated at home, or are even bullied themselves by their parents or other relatives. Their strong feelings of insecurity drive them to get attention in unproductive, unacceptable ways, by taunting and threatening people and using physical force to rob or humiliate others. Frenquently they choose students with a lack of confidence as their victims; this is ironic, since they also lack confidence in themselves. It is almost as if they think that a reputation for being cruel and uncaring, perhaps even violent, is better than not being noticed at all. In reality, bullies are crying out for people to pay attention to them, so there is much wisdom in the saying, "Ignore bullies and they will leave you alone." In addition, though, you will need to show self-confidence and inner calmness. Another Opinion:The fact is that humans are animals. This is not a metaphor; it's a fact. Another fact is that animals are driven to establish dominance. While there may be some who bully out of a lack of confidence, just as often it is from an inflated sence of arrogance.

People are complicated critters, but critters they are. What drives the alpha of the pack, pride, and herd, drives the bully too.
