"Tree hugger" is a perjorative term for a person with environmental concerns, particularly with the cutting of trees. Forests have many benefits, such as replenishing the oxygen in the air, stabilizing and fertilizing the soil, helping retain moisture and providing an environment where certain kinds of wild animals, birds and plants can thrive.

History is full of examples of societies causing their own destruction because of lack of care of their environment. Environmentalists generally are concerned about the possibility that such disasters could occur on a global scale if people are not careful.

But also, some people like being near trees. They provide shade, they smell nice, they look pretty, they often house birds who sound nice, and they are generally a treat for the senses. People who appreciate this are not going to want to see them destroyed.

Also, some people hate to see old things destroyed. Old buildings or other public monuments are a reminder of our past. Trees, which live much much longer than people do if not cut down, can also be reminders of the past.
