Why do people who get bullied become bullies?

Bullying can kill through violence and suicide. Sometimes physical assault is a part of bullying, and sometimes the injuries result in death. Other times, the victim grows tired of bullying and commits suicide.

There are a number of reasons why victims of bullying may become bullies. The reasons are similar to why victims of other things end up victimizing others in similar ways.

First off, bullying is what they know and what is modeled to them. When you are bullied, you might study the bullies, become obsessed with the bullies, and spend every waking moment thinking about them. So over time, you begin to think like the bullies. Even The Bible warns about being around angry people, since you may learn to be like them.

Next, bullying can function as a drug or as a pressure release valve for some. They find they are frustrated, and this is how they cope.

In some ways, stunted emotional growth can be a cause. When you are being bullied and are constantly living in a panic mode, you are not growing emotionally. So you don't get to develop more healthy coping skills, and so you might be more prone to frustration.

There may be "exception thinking." They might reason that their abuser was wrong, but they are somehow justified.

There may be Stockholm Syndrome, where victims of kidnapping and violence often take the side of the aggressors as a survival mechanism.

There may also be some sort of entitlement or reparations type thinking. They may feel society owes them because they were bullied, or they may feel that anything they do is payback to society.

There are power dynamic issues where people who get their power taken from them by others will in turn take it from others. That sometimes happens with inmates who were victims of sexual assault while in prison and having to go back to prison because they became rapists.
