For the most part they did not like black people for their different values. Interestingly when the klu klux klan was left powerless after the civil rights movements the crime rate commited by blacks skyrocketed in the later years.

Because they were afraid of African Americans taking all of there jobs. So mostly just fear. They also thought they were protecting there community, because they did more than just Lynching, they would donate money to certain people, who needed help.
