Because gays are not seen as being 'normal' as the majority of the population are straight. Being gay is looked on as 'different' or 'wrong' and it's a change from what people are used to, and some people find it difficult to adjust to change, especially if they have been brought up (like people of an older generation) to disapprove of gay people.
